Edible Italy: Gelato at Bianco Latte

Yum. Are you jealous yet?

Above is a "Margharita" - 750 grams of delicious Italian gelato. Starting from the top, going clockwise, we have the flavors Bacio, Pistachio, Stracciatella, and Cicco-Arancia.

Bacio is based from a popular Italian chocolate of the same name. It has flecks of hazelnut but should NOT be compared to Nutella. The nutty flavor here is a bit more intense - the flavors of the chocolate and the nut really just "pop" more than Nutella. Now, I'm still a loyalist to Nutella but this was a nice change to shake things up.

Pistachio is...pistachio. Freshly made, I could feel the tiny pieces of pistachio that were ground into the gelato. I'd never had this flavor before but found that I really enjoyed it. I hesitate to say that it's salty because the flavor is more complex but that's the easiest thing for me to relate it to. A delicious change for when you want a gelato but nothing too sweet.

Stracciatella, my perennial favorite! A long time ago, I went to Rome with my family, my best friend, and her family. My fondest memory from that trip is that my parents let me have two scoops of gelato every night. I know I didn't double scoop stracciatella but I did have at least one scoop each time. Even now, if I order a cone I have them split the flavors so I can get stracciatella and try something new too.

Cicco-Arancia is Bianco Latte's chocolate/orange flavor. They use a really dark chocolate and manage to capture a tangy orange flavor. This is an amazing combination. The orange keeps the chocolate from being too rich and the chocolate keeps the orange from tasting too acidic.

So, why the big container? We've gone for cones and individual bowls before but I really wanted to try an assortment of flavors. The four-pack allows us to try three new flavors while "preserving" my stracciatella. The best part part about gelato is the health factor. While it might be a stretch to call it 'health food', you can definitely feel better about eating a cone of gelato versus an ice-cream cone. Gelato is made from all-natural ingredients and contains fewer calories and butter fat than ice cream.

So come and see us and we'll take you to Bianco Latte for your very own scoop!

McG, I hear you on the stracciatella love. That's my favorite flavor too. I ate it all over Europe, Geneva included (mmm, Movenpick). I loved getting gelato every day in Italy as well, and can't wait to come visit! YAY!
