Good Eats: Panificio Luini

Once upon a time, before Milan shut down for August, Marco and I went out for a quick dinner. Downtown, the streets were packed with shoppers enjoying the twice-yearly sales.

Not in the mood for a big meal but looking for something interesting, we finally made it over to Panificio Luini. A veritable institution of Milanese fast food, this bakery specializes in panzarotti, small calzones filled with delicious goodness. Back in the late 40s, the Luini family moved their shop from Puglia, in the south, up here to Milan. They've been running this bakery every since.

We were lucky that the line was inside the shop when we arrived. It was pretty early but there was quite a bustle at the counter...maybe all the sales shoppers were grabbing a late afternoon snack?

Luini's uses a family secret recipe for their light dough which is then salted and fried. I picked up the original version with tomato and mozzarella. Marco went for the prosciutto and mozzarella. He gave his a thumbs up but was a bit jealous of the creamier texture and simpler taste of my classico. For a healthier twist, they apparently sell baked versions but I can't imagine how a baked dough, salted and stuffed with cheese, is that much an improvement over the fried version.

The shop was filled with Italians, despite it's 'round the corner' location from tourist-central (aka the Duomo and Galleria). To satisfy his curiosity, Mark grabbed a panzerotto dolce, the sweetened cookie version of the savory snack. Stuffed with a strawberry jam and dusted with sugar, it was apparently pretty good to Mark. Personally, I saved myself the opportunity to grab a lemon granita for the stroll home.
