The Eternal City

Go to Rome in September.

In my opinion, late September is the best time of year to pay a visit to the Eternal City. You can never escape the hoardes of tourists but as the air gets cooler and kids go back to school, the crowds seem to thin around the major sites.

I spent the first half of last week in Rome for work. While Mark and I were supposed to go together, school and work kept him back in Milan. Luckily, a friend from language training works at the Vatican and was kind enough to keep me company for two different dinners! Work was busy and very rewarding. It was great to meet my Roman colleagues and swap ideas.

After arriving on Sunday night, I headed down to Trastevere to meet my friend for dinner. After wandering through a few piazzas, we managed to work up an appetite for pasta.

I didn't get a whole lot of time to sight-see after work, but did make it down to the Trevi Fountain on Monday evening. Compared to two Christmases ago, it was practically empty!

And one of all the kitschy souvenirs (no shopping for me):

I was planning on saving the Pantheon for Tuesday, my last night, since it's one of my favorite sights in Rome. I'm glad that I made it on Monday, however, since it ended up raining all Tuesday night! And despite the fact that it would've been cool to see the rain come in through the hold on top of the dome, wandering around Rome in the cold rain was definitely at the bottom of my 'to-do' list.

And if a certain friend from Lagos is reading this, I took my friend (with her hubby and baby) to L'Orso 80 for dinner on Tuesday. The antipasti is as delicious as I remembered and as you recommended years ago!
