The National Harbor

Mark, Cooper, and I headed over to check out the National Harbor in Hyattsville, Maryland over the Memorial Day weekend. Just a short trip over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, it ended up being a beautiful day to check out this new sight.

The site's developers are trying to market the Harbor as "the next big thing" here in the DC area. With so many historic and natural monuments, they've got a difficult battle ahead. That said, I can see the potential. Very little was open - the only outdoor seating/food area was at a Potbelly - but it'll probably end up being a great little afternoon trip for those living in the DC metro area. Since we brought Cooper with us, we could check out any of the restaurants that are in the new Gaylord and Westin Hotels. I ducked into a couple of contemporary art galleries and Mark checked out the overwhelming glassy structure that is the Gaylord Convention Center.

It was neat to see the new site of 'The Awakening,' a statue that has been at Hains Point in DC for the past 28 years. The statue consists of five separate pieces, buried into the ground, that shows a giant struggling to free himself. Apparently it was flooded several times by the Potomac River at its previous site! It's right up against the Potomac here in Hyattsville so perhaps it will be flooded again, but for now it's a pretty neat sight to see.
